For me, Royal Rumble is the most exciting PPV of the year. We get to witness a breakout performance of either a new star in the making or a superstar determined to return back to the spotlight. Its matter of honor and prestige to stand tall after removing others and winning the rumble.
Over the years we have some amazing performances by superstars who went to win the rumble and some gave us memorable rumble moments. But this question does arise that who is the ideal winner of the rumble - a promising star or a grizzled veteran. Well, WWE have not been 'Warren Buffet' at picking their winners. And predictions from wrestling news channels have been so accurate that it just doubles down on the fact that creative has not worked hard on the match, its hype and its outcomes. It has become so binary that it takes away the excitement at times.
30 superstars fight for over an hour to win a shot of their career - thats Royal Rumble. How does this become boring!? This is something which WWE can fix and come up with a better product.
a. Beat the wrestling predictions - It's never good when predictions come true. This just strongly shows how stale the creative has become. It will take a lot of thinking to beat the predictions but not impossible. Involve the wrestlers in the process, they'll be the best support.
b. Build the hype - Rumble is part of the big 4, its the ticket to WrestleMania. Also I hate it that LED have replaced all the cool stages WWE used to have. I mean LED is cool to but lacks the soul. At least for PPV has some cool stages. Get more rumble qualifying matches on RAW, Smackdown and NXT.
c. Bring some soul - build underdogs, start their stories, glorify championships. not as easy as it looks but it will have to start somewhere. At some point, there will have to be champion who is a dreamer rather than a wrestler. Compare the promos of then and now, what we miss is the salvation. The championships need to return to their former glory and the quest for the championship needs to be glorious.
We never know who's gonna show up for the Rumble but why do we have fixed bets on who's winning it. It needs to unpredictable, brash, fun, thrilling and royal.
